Vedanta’s Meenakshi Energy Fully Activates Major 1000 MW Power Plant in Andhra Pradesh

By PTI | New Delhi

In a significant boost to India’s power infrastructure, Meenakshi Energy Ltd (MEL), a subsidiary of Vedanta Ltd, has announced the complete operationalisation of its 1000 MW thermal power plant located in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. The facility was fully restored within two years of its acquisition by the mining conglomerate.

The plant consists of four units: two larger 350 MW units and two smaller 150 MW units. The two 150 MW units were stabilised and made operational earlier this year. This milestone was followed this month by the successful commissioning of the two remaining 350 MW units, bringing the entire facility to its full 1000 MW capacity.

Commenting on the development, a Vedanta spokesperson emphasized the continued critical role of thermal power in India’s energy landscape, stating it accounts for over 70% of the country’s electricity. These projects are hailed as the backbone of national energy security, crucial for meeting peak demand and ensuring a stable power supply.

In a notable step towards sustainability, MEL operates using 100% saline water, thereby conserving precious freshwater resources. The company has also implemented systems to recover water from its ash dyke and has cleared legacy ash waste.

With this addition, Vedanta Power’s total installed capacity across its various plants now stands at 4,780 MW. This portfolio includes major power projects in Punjab, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha, reinforcing the company’s position as a key player in India’s power generation sector.
