Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a subsidiary of The Tata Power Company Limited, has commissioned a 1 GW solar power project for SJVN Limited, marking the company’s largest commissioned solar project to date. The project has an installed capacity of 1,000 MW (AC) or 1,400 MWp (DC) and is compliant with the Domestic Content Requirement (DCR).

The project uses around 2.4 million solar modules manufactured at Tata Power’s TP Solar Limited facility in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. The facility produces both solar cells and modules, aligning the project with domestic manufacturing requirements under India’s renewable energy procurement norms.
Located across the Bandarwala and Karnisar Bhatiyan sites in Bikaner district of Rajasthan, the solar project has been developed to supply power to multiple states. Of the total capacity, 500 MW has been allocated to Rajasthan Urja Vikas and IT Services Limited (RUVITL), 300 MW to Jammu & Kashmir Power Limited (JKPL), and 200 MW to Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL). The generated electricity will be supplied to Rajasthan, Jammu & Kashmir, and Uttarakhand.
According to company estimates, the project is expected to generate approximately 2,454.84 million units of electricity in its first year of operation. This generation is projected to result in an annual reduction of about 1.74 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
The project was executed in a region characterised by extreme climatic conditions, with summer temperatures reaching up to 50 degrees Celsius and winter temperatures falling to around 3 degrees Celsius.
Construction was also affected by challenging terrain and restricted vehicle movement. The company stated that engineering measures such as the use of DCR-compliant mono bifacial modules, precision ramming techniques, and inverters designed for high-temperature operation were deployed to address these conditions.
In addition to energy generation, the project has contributed to local employment during the construction phase. Over 300 workers from nearby areas were engaged, and more than 25 local vendors participated in project-related activities, according to the company.
Following the commissioning of this project, TPREL’s total utility-scale renewable energy capacity stands at 11.6 GW, including 4.9 GW executed as third-party engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) projects.
Tata Power currently has 5.8 GW of its own renewable capacity in operation, comprising 4.7 GW of solar and 1.1 GW of wind energy. Another 5.8 GW is under various stages of development and is expected to be commissioned in phases over the next 3 to 24 months.
