Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, and Tripura have been named the top-performing states in the latest national energy efficiency index. The ranking was released today by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE).

The State Energy Efficiency Index (SEEI) 2024 evaluates how well 36 states and union territories are implementing energy-saving measures. This year’s report used 66 different indicators across important areas like buildings, industries, transport, and agriculture.
States were grouped into four categories based on their performance: Front Runners, Achievers, Contenders, and Aspirants. The top scorers in their respective groups were Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, and Tripura.
The report shows significant progress across the country. For example, 31 states now have policies to promote electric vehicles, and 24 have adopted modern energy-saving building codes. In a major step, all 36 states and UTs have prepared action plans to improve energy efficiency.
Shri Akash Tripathi, Director General of BEE, stated that energy efficiency is crucial for India’s goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2070. It provides a low-cost way to save energy and fight climate change.
This index helps states track their progress, learn from each other, and work towards a more sustainable and energy-efficient future for India.
