G20 Energy Transitions Meeting in South Africa highlighting India’s focus on just and inclusive energy transition

Union Minister of Power, Manohar Lal, will address the G20 Energy Transitions Ministerial Meeting (ETMM) to be held in KwaZulu Natal Province, South Africa, from 7th to 10th October 2025, as per an official statement.

The meeting, hosted under the South African G20 Presidency, will bring together energy leaders from the world’s major economies to deliberate on key issues shaping the global energy future. The Minister is expected to emphasise India’s steadfast commitment to collaborative global efforts aimed at achieving a just, affordable, and inclusive energy transition, aligning with the broader vision of “One Earth, One Family, One Future.”

Furthermore, the statement added that the Minister is expected to attend sessions on “Energy Security, Clean Cooking, Affordable and Reliable Access” and “Sustainable Industrial Development.” These discussions aim to strengthen international cooperation to ensure universal access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy, which is crucial for economic growth and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Energy has been central to G20 discussions based on the sector’s contribution to sustainable development since 2009. A dedicated Energy Sustainability Working Group was established in 2013 to discuss various energy-related matters. Eventually, in 2014, the G20 Energy Sustainability Working Group (ESWG), co-chaired by Australia and India, focused on ways to improve the operation of global energy markets and strengthen collaboration between developed and emerging economies.

Subsequent ESWG Chairs, following India and Australia, have been introducing slight amendments to the working group’s agenda based on their country’s priorities.
