TruAlt Bioenergy, GAIL (India) JV to develop network of Compressed Bio-Gas Plants

By Enersider Desk | New Delhi

TruAlt Bioenergy Limited has signed an agreement to enter into a strategic joint venture with GAIL (India) Limited, to accelerate the development of India’s Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) sector.

As per the agreement, GAIL shall acquire 49% equity stakes in Leafiniti Bioenergy Private Limited (LBPL), a 100% subsidiary of TruAlt, subject to satisfactory completion of Condition Precedents and DIPAM approval. LBPL owns and operates 10.2 TPD press-mud based CBG plant in Karnataka since 2021, an official statement said.

The JV will focus on establishing multiple greenfield CBG plants as part of a phased roll-out designed to scale rapidly and deliver measurable environmental, economic and social impact.

In its first phase, the joint venture will roll out six state-of-the-art greenfield plants, each with a capacity of 12 tonnes per day mainly based on associated products from Sugar mills, delivering a combined annual output of 23,976 tonnes of CBG. This build out is set to create 700–1,050 direct and indirect jobs, catalysing rural employment and economic activity. In addition to clean energy, the facilities shall have potential to generate high-value agricultural inputs, including 83,916 tonnes of Fermented Organic Manure (FOM) and 4,03,596 tonnes of Liquid Fermented Organic Manure (LFOM) annually. This is going to improve soil health and also strengthen circular agriculture, ensuring that farmers become active stakeholders and beneficiaries in India’s green energy transition.

From an environmental perspective, the JV’s first phase is projected to displace approximately 17,000 tonnes of fossil fuels annually and avoid 8,000 tonnes of methane emissions per annum, contributing meaningfully to India’s climate commitments, including its net-zero by 2070 vision.

“This joint venture will provide impetus to the ongoing bio fuel revolution happening in India, driving innovation and sustainable growth in the energy sector,” Rajeev Kumar Singhal, Director (Business Development), GAIL said.

“Through this strategic partnership with GAIL, we are creating a robust national ecosystem for Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) enabling a seamless shift to energy solutions that are both economically viable and environmentally restorative. We believe CBG is India’s definitive answer to clean, circular energy,” Vijay Nirani, Founder & Managing Director, TruAlt Bioenergy, said.
