Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL) has announced that Kumar Shanker has assumed charge as its Managing Director. He succeeds Kamal Kishore Chatiwal, who has returned to parent company GAIL (India) Ltd.

Shanker is a chemical engineering graduate from Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani. He brings more than 32 years of experience in India’s oil and gas sector, spanning natural gas processing, petrochemicals, project management, corporate strategy, marketing, regulatory affairs and city gas distribution. Prior to joining IGL, Shanker served as Managing Director of Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited (MNGL) in Pune. During his tenure, MNGL emerged as one of India’s top five CGD companies in terms of growth, profitability and infrastructure development for domestic piped natural gas connections.
Before heading MNGL, Shanker spent nearly three decades with GAIL (India) Limited, where he held various positions across multiple business verticals. He worked at locations including Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and New Delhi. He has experience in regulatory and commercial aspects of the natural gas sector.
Shanker has been involved in regulatory matters including grant of authorisations, open access, pipeline tariffs and affiliate code of conduct frameworks. He has played a role in shaping policy and regulatory reforms in India’s natural gas industry over the past two decades. His involvement includes the introduction of the Unified Tariff mechanism for the National Gas Grid System.
IGL is India’s largest city gas distribution company. It operates CGD networks across 33 districts in 12 geographical areas spanning Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan, serving customers through its natural gas infrastructure.
