Girija Shankar has taken charge as Managing Director on the Board of Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited (MNGL) with effect from June 5, 2026.

He has over three decades of experience across the natural gas value chain, city gas distribution, natural gas pipeline, marketing, operations, projects and infrastructure development. Girija Shankar is a B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Delhi (1993 batch) and holds a Masters in Marketing Management from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai.
He joined GAIL in 1993 and over the next three decades worked in various roles across domains including projects, operation and maintenance of cross country natural gas pipelines and associated gas terminals, marketing of gas, petrochemical and liquid hydrocarbon products of GAIL. He recently served as Managing Director of Green Gas Limited, a city gas distribution company operating in Lucknow, Agra, Ayodhya, Sultanpur and Unnao.
During his career, he played a role in the construction of the Propane Recovery Project at GAIL’s Vijaipur Complex in Guna, Madhya Pradesh and implementing the ISO 9001 system across HBJ Pipeline. As In-Charge of Management Control Centre of HBJ cross country pipeline, he managed gas supply and demand across India in the 1990s. He also played a role in setting up Regional Gas Management Centres across the country and commissioning of GAIL’s various pipelines including the DUPL-DPPL pipeline system.
A certified Six Sigma Black Belt, he has experience in natural gas, RLNG, LNG, petrochemical and LHC marketing. As Head of Gas Marketing, he was associated with GAIL’s three main zonal marketing offices handling approximately 70% of GAIL’s revenue in gas business. He has also worked at GAIL Corporate RLNG Marketing and played a role in developing marketing strategies for GAIL’s LNG imported from the United States.
Prior to joining Green Gas Limited in June 2024, he was heading GAIL Ahmedabad Zonal Marketing Office. He was involved in initiatives including conversion of three Gujarat State Transport buses into LNG as a pilot project in 2022 and India’s first evacuation of natural gas through cascades from the onshore gas field of Vedanta in Bharuch, Gujarat. He also played a role in implementation of SATAT in Gujarat.
