India and Republic of Korea issue joint statements on sustainability cooperation and energy resource security

India and the Republic of Korea agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation to address global sustainability challenges through practical collaboration in climate change, maritime and Arctic issues, according to a joint statement released on April 20, 2026.

The two sides reaffirmed their commitment to fulfill the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. They decided to promote cooperation on environmental matters and climate change, including sustainable management of natural resources.

Both welcomed the conclusion of an MOC under Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement, which establishes a cooperative approach for investment-driven mitigation projects. They will promote cooperation on the carbon market, renewable energy and low-carbon technologies. India welcomed the ROK joining the International Solar Alliance. The ROK welcomed India joining the Global Green Growth Institute.

The two sides agreed to expand cooperation in marine science, sustainable fisheries, coastal ecosystem protection, and marine pollution prevention. They also agreed to expand cooperation in the Arctic, including Arctic science and Arctic shipping.

In a separate joint statement on energy resource security, India and the ROK affirmed their commitment to open markets and rules-based trade. India is a key supplier to the ROK of naphtha and other petroleum feedstocks, while the ROK is a leading supplier to India of petroleum products and lubricant base oils.

Both sides agreed to maintain a stable supply of energy resources to each other, explore closer collaboration among LNG-consuming countries, and strengthen cooperation in the shipbuilding sector including setting up shipyards in India, shipyard modernization, and technology partnership.
