POWERGRID acquires two inter-region transmission projects worth Rs 3,375 cr

By Enersider Desk | New Delhi

State-owned Power Grid Corporation of India on Thursday said it has acquired two key projects worth Rs 3,375 crore, which will strengthen the energy transmission network in the country.

POWERGRID acquired Vindhyachal Varanasi Transmission Limited from PFC Consulting Limited, for the execution of the project titled “Inter-regional (NR-WR) Transmission System Strengthening to Relieve Loading of 765 kV Vindhyachal–Varanasi D/c Line.”

The second SPV, SR WR Power Transmission Limited, was acquired from REC Power Development and Consultancy Limited on October 17, 2025.

This project, “Inter-Regional Strengthening between Southern and Western Grids,” includes the construction of 765 kV D/c transmission lines across Karnataka and Maharashtra, along with associated line bays at both ends.

The acquired SPVs – Vindhyachal Varanasi Transmission Limited and SR WR Power Transmission Limited – are expected to decongest heavily loaded transmission corridors, improve power reliability, and facilitate seamless transfer of renewable energy across regions.

Additionally, they will support the evacuation of power from upcoming pumped storage projects, contributing to India’s clean energy and grid stability goals, POWERGRID said in a statement.

Earlier in October, the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for POWERGRID’s transmission system strengthening at Kurnool-III PS for integration of additional RE generation projects in the presence of several other officials. The ₹2,886 crore project includes construction of a 765 kV double-circuit Kurnool-Ill Pooling Station-Chilakaluripeta transmission line and will enhance transformation capacity by 6,000 MVA, enabling large-scale evacuation of renewable energy and supporting the nation’s growth, as per the official statement.

Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID), is a Schedule ‘A’, ‘Maharatna’ Public Sector Enterprise of Govt. of India which was incorporated on 23rd Oct 1989 under the Company Act, 1956. POWERGRID is a listed Company, with 51.34% holding of Government of India and the balance is held by Institutional Investors and public.
