Hyundai Motor India’s Managing Director, Unsoo Kim, stated on Thursday that the country’s shift toward green fuels and sustainability is defining the future of its automobile industry. He emphasized that this transition is being powered by a range of new technologies, from electric vehicles to hydrogen.
Speaking at the 65th SIAM Annual Convention in New Delhi, Kim explained that Hyundai is developing solutions across all types of engine systems. The company is working on innovations in internal combustion engines, electric vehicles (EVs), hydrogen fuel-cell technology, and flex-fuel solutions. These efforts aim to serve both regular customers and the logistics sector. Kim pointed to real-world examples, like the hydrogen fuel cell trucks used in North America. These trucks, which support operations at a Hyundai plant, handle nearly half of the facility’s logistics work using hydrogen produced on-site.
For India, Kim outlined a five-part strategy focusing on sustainable technology, building a complete EV ecosystem, aligning with government policies, forming public-private partnerships, and overall sustainability. He mentioned that Hyundai’s factory in Chennai is set to meet the RE100 goal—using 100 per cent renewable energy—by the end of this year. The company is also exploring future concepts like urban air mobility and micro-mobility for last-mile travel connections. Kim praised Indian government initiatives like FAME, Production Linked Incentives (PLI), and PM Gati Shakti for building a strong base for sustainable mobility. He said India has the right size and talent to help create future mobility solutions and become a key player in the global shift.
Calling recent GST reforms a “landmark initiative,” Kim said these changes will boost the automotive sector and increase demand in both cities and rural areas. He urged global and Indian companies to work together to speed up the transition.
Ending his speech, Kim reaffirmed Hyundai’s commitment to India’s mobility transformation and quoted Prime Minister Narendra Modi: “India’s time is now. We have the opportunity to lead the world in a way that is sustainable, inclusive, and transformative.”
