New NHPC Chief Bhupender Gupta Takes Charge, Vows to Boost Green Energy

By Enersider Desk | New Delhi

Bhupender Gupta has officially taken over as the Chairman and Managing Director of NHPC Limited, India’s leading hydroelectric power company. He assumed his new role on September 4, 2025, at the company’s headquarters in Faridabad. Gupta joins NHPC from THDC India Limited, where he was the Director. He will also continue to hold the additional charge of Chairman and Managing Director of SJVN Limited.

An electrical engineer with an MBA, Gupta brings over 34 years of rich experience in the power sector. He began his career in 1991 and has worked in major public sector companies, contributing to hydro, thermal, renewable energy, transmission, and distribution projects. He played a key role in the commissioning and maintenance of India’s largest hydroelectric plant, the 1500 MW Nathpa Jhakri project. He has also worked on international assignments in Bhutan and led financing for major power projects at REC Limited. More recently, at THDCIL, he helped overcome challenges to commission critical units of the Khurja thermal power project and the Tehri pumped storage project.

Looking ahead, Gupta’s vision is to help India meet its rising electricity demand using clean, non-fossil fuel sources. He aims to make the country self-reliant in energy security. His plan includes adopting new technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), integrating electric vehicles (EVs) into the power grid, enhancing cybersecurity, and promoting green hydrogen, bioenergy, and energy storage solutions.

His leadership is expected to drive NHPC’s focus on sustainable and technologically advanced energy solutions for the nation.
